Air Force Upgrade by Matthew Homsher 9th

Summary: The Air Force received a new weapon system in order to protect against hackers. It recently reached full operational capability. It’s called the Air Force Intranet Control Weapon System (AFINC for short), and even though it has weapon system in the name, its main goal is to make cyber-attacks on the Air Force more difficult.  It accomplishes this by limiting the number of access points from 100 to 16 making defense against cyber-attacks more manageable. In the words of Air Force Colonel Pamela Wooley, “We are definitely not trying to weaponize cyber. This is truly a defensive system to protect the Air Force Network.” Colonel Wooley says AFINC is “literally kind of a fence line” and considering the Air Force is subjected “more than one billion firewall, web, and email blocks per week” it is one important fence.

Synopsis: This kind of cyber defense for the Air Force resembles the beefing up of the military after World War 1, except now we have to defend our computers and our country.  The main concern of something like this is that it could become a weapon, but as stated a million times by the Colonel it is “truly a defensive system.” This sounds all in all, like a good step for the Air Force.
