Only Female Faces in the Chamber After the Big Storm--Becca Brandt 4th Period

On Tuesday, January 26th, there was a short meeting of the Senate in the morning. This was the first meeting after the huge snow storm in the North-East. Lisa Murkowski, Republican Senator, looked around the room and noticed that there was not one male in the room. The women were brave enough to show up in the bad weather, the men were not. While addressing the rest of the women, Murkowski says "...you look around the chamber, the presiding officer is female. All of our parliamentarians are female. Our floor managers are female. All of our pages are female."

To me, this is ironic. It is ironic because before World War I, the jobs of women were to cook, clean, watch the children, and clean some more. During wars, women would get to take over some heavier jobs, but in World War I, women actually got to fight, in a way, for America. They got to work as nurses in the war. They also got to finally take over factory jobs for good. When men returned from war, they were looking for work because a lot of women actually got to keep their jobs this time. It is ironic because now, over 100 years later, men are the ones who do not work. Of course it was their choice to not show up to work, but women have always been referred to as the weaker sex, but these women were brave enough to go out into the storm to attend work because they care about their jobs enough to do that.

  1. Represent. This is pretty funny to me just because it's their job. If half of the people can show up the other half probably could too. But I am liking the fact that it was all women. There's, of course, still some ideas that women aren't strong enough for what ever reason, so I hope this helps rid that idea, because it's getting kind of old.

  2. I can't really say I expect all the Senators to be there, in the given circumstance that they may not be able to make it to the meeting; however, it's pretty disrespectful you don't value citizens enough to be at work so you can continue doing your job. 3. Men just make so many excuses because they can and because it's accepted, but the women probably felt they needed to be there because if they made an excuse people would say they were whining and call them the weaker sex.
