Eva Semrad//flex --Voting in North Carolina

The new requirement in North Carolina for all voters to provide a picture ID is causing discussion on the problems it will cause with minority voters. The major concern is that this new requirement will hinder those who don't have a picture ID. It's debatable if this is discriminatory.

In the late 19th century in America, laws were passed forcing all voters to pay a tax in order to vote, and African-Americans had to pass a literacy test (considered difficult by even today's standards). These laws, the Jim Crow laws, were passed in order to purposefully prevent blacks from voting. The new law in North Carolina, whether passed with the intent to discriminate or not, is similar in the fact that it is harder for people to vote.

  1. This is concerning, we certainly don't want a repeat for the Jim Crow Laws. I wonder why they suddenly decided that this step was necessary?

  2. I feel like it isn't discrimination becuase not that many people don't have an ID. If they didn't how did they drive to get there to vote.. i know that there will be exceptions but maybe they're just taking extra precautions against people voting using someones name that isn't their own and also that they don't vote more than once
