Hunting continues over suspect who pushed father of two onto subway tracks, By: Nina Bharadwaj, 2nd Period

Footage has just been released of a suspect that shoved Wai Kuen Kwok, 61 and father of two, off of a subway platform and onto the tracks in New York City. This incident took place at a subway station in the Bronx, and it is said by his wife, who was a witness, that the act was unwarranted. The suspect is still being hunted, but it is known that after he pushed Kwok off of the platform, he fled the scene on a bus. The man is characterized as balding and at the time was wearing white sneakers, a leather jacket, and dark pants.
Kwok had been employed at a factory in Brooklyn and was hit by the train at 8:40am. He had been traveling to Chinatown with his wife to go grocery shopping, when he was struck. This homicide pronounced him dead on the spot. The motorman, who was driving at the time, made an attempt to slam on his breaks, but he wasn't quick enough. Kwok's son stated that his father had a plan to "work and get his sons through school" and that "He wanted us to be successful."
Other incidents involving being pushed onto subway tracks have taken place in the past few years. A man had been pushed off of the subway platform by a homeless man that he had been fighting with, in April 2013. This happened again in December 2012 and again with the suspect as a women later in that month.
This really is just an awful situation, considering the act was unprovoked. This situation happened on Sunday, and it is really frightening to think about how recent it was. I have been to New York City before, and while I am cautious of being too close to the tracks, I would never think about being deliberately pushed off of the subway platform. It really should make one think about being more aware of their surroundings. Also, the population of homeless people in New York City has continued to drastically increase, and I feel that maybe more shelters should be built for them in order to ensure that they are cared for. While some of them intentionally chose a life of poverty through negative choices, others are just mentally unstable. Maybe if there were more places built to keep the homeless in a secure place, occurrences like this wouldn't happen.

  2. Did this take place in a crowd of people? Its so random that a man could push another off into the train tracks. Maybe he was bumped? Just thinking best case scenario.
