Rape case in UVA fraternity- Hannah Clifford 5th Period

The University of Virginia is suspending all fraternities until January 9th because of a case of rape that became public through the Rolling Stones magazine. In 2012, a woman identified as Jackie said that she was invited to a party at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and was gang raped by seven men. Unfortunately, Jackie's experience is only one of many that have happened at UVA. The university was not planning on doing nothing about sexual assault cases until hearing news of Jackie's article. Now, there will be no fraternity activities until the student holiday is over. Instead, there will be student and faculty gatherings to help prevent future sexual assault at UVA.

Ralph Ellis wrote this article for CNN to spread the word that there needs to be more emphasis on sexual assault in our colleges and universities. It's tragic that this woman and so many others before her were put through the terrors of rape. Not only that, but it's also disheartening to hear that the university only got involved when the press was in the picture. Jackie took advantage of her freedom of speech and press, and thankfully she received a positive response. Though many have been scared to speak up in a situation such as this, Jackie used her voice to make a difference in her university.

  1. It makes me sick that the only reason the university is doing anything about the situation is because it has become national news.

  3. I agree with you in saying how immoral it was of the college to only get involved when news of the situation spread across the nation. It makes me question the numerous other situations that have occurred yet have been kept a secret in order to maintain a good reputation. The thought is sickening.

  4. I think its terrible how often you hear about rape cases at colleges being covered up. Administrations don't want to report it to the police because they know it will ge tout and they'll have to report it in their statistics.
