Madana Kloss 4th period

U.S teen leaves America to join ISIS

19 year old Mohammed Hamzah Khan was arrested on Saturday October 4, at the O'Hare International Airport, accused of attempting to provide information and aid to the ISIS. Before attempting to leave the United States, Khan wrote a letter to his mother and father, saying that he was leaving in order to join the ISIS. The letter also states that Khan wanted his family to join him; however warned the family that they could not tell anyone about Khan's travel plans. In order to join the ISIS, Khan bought a round trip ticket from Chicago to Istanbul; however once Khan made it through airport security, federal agents stopped him and searched his home. Khan is taken in custody where he is in trial, carrying a charge of 15 years in prison and a 250,000 fine. I believe Khan's decision of going to the ISIS is going against the U.S. as Khan is believed of trying to share the United States private information. I think Khan went for what he thought was the best for him yet it would have not benefit him anything except for consequences for what he had tried to do.

Well, Khan might have tried to join ISIS because he doesn't feel like a part of his community. His religion and racial background sets him apart from many other people in the U.S. The idea of joining a "greater cause" could have been very appealing to him, as he thinks of joining them to help even help in "humanitarian" missions, no doubt being conversion crusades. He thought that by joining, he would be helping his family, establishing an Islamic state in the Middle East. This man deserves to be convicted and imprisoned for around five to ten years. You wouldn't want to imprison him for longer because completely destroying his life would make more people hate the U.S. and join ISIS. The U.S. needs to assure its citizens that ISIS isn't an answer to life, the universe, and everything. Khan thought joining ISIS would protect his family, but instead, he destroyed his family. He still would have destroyed his family if he successfully joined. I believe that he was ultimately trying to support something he believed in, but believed in something that has put all human lives at risk.

  1. This is so scary but I most definitely agree. This society is so corrupted that people get things into their minds that they think are maybe for various reasons. He may have felt that he didn't belong because this country has a huge problem with racism and prejudgment. Stereo-types is what can ruin a persons life. I just pray that no one else is having these thoughts because it could end very badly for our country.

  2. I agree, we live in a country where people have the right to have their own thoughts and opinions. This is just going to come along with it. I hope that people see the danger in these actions and take time to think about the impact they could have on the country in the long run.
