Chemical Leak Kills 4- Lauren Kuehmeier, Period 2

Last night at about 4 a.m, four workers at a chemical plant were killed  due to a leak. One of the five men survived but is severely injured. The chemical leaked was methyl mercaptan, is used in insecticides and fungicides, as well as to odorize natural gas for safety purposes. The plant was said not to be at risk by community members, yet the tragedy still occurred.

It's terrible that it takes a devastation like this to reveal how said to be stable chemical plants are still unpredictable at best. Though these men were brave enough to deal with such chemicals, the deaths show that even skilled workers are submitted to a great amount of danger. What's worse is these are chemicals regularly used by companies, these are the sort of things sprayed on the fruit and vegetables we consume and yet they are powerful enough to cause death with a bigger dosage.

  1. This is the risk we take when messing with dangerous fluids. We must understand that if we ever hope to safely use these chemicals, we must create stronger safety regulations.

  2. I think this shows that there can really never be too much safety and this reminds me of what happened in West, Texas.

  3. Chemicals are really tricky to deal with and can easily become dangerous as shown with this incident...

  4. Chemicals can be dangerous, and hopefully sometime soon there will be a better system regarding the safety of plant workers.
