Move over Barbie! Make room for "average doll" Lammily By: Heather McKay

Everyone knows of the blonde, tall, skinny, idealistic doll manufactured by Mattel, but she may have a new competitor with Nickolay Lamm's new brain child, Lammily. She is shorter, broader, and proportional to a realistic, healthy 19 year old woman. It started out as in idea, but as the model was made, he began receiving countless emails and questions....everyone wants Lammily. He plans to be shipping by the end of November, just in time for the holidays!
Now you may be thinking, well....but most little girls would rather have the extraordinarily beautiful Barbie, but actually the kids that were interviewed highly preferred the realistic Lammily. They saw her as beautiful and more like them, with normal sized feet and a reasonable amount of makeup.

Throughout history, the opinion on what is beautiful has been turned inside out multiple times. For example in the Renaissance period, thicker women with pale skin were considered the most desirable...however now it is the opposite. Magazines are filled with tan, skinny women with pounds of makeup on. On that note though, I believe that society is changing. We seem to be getting a less skewed vision on beauty and attempting to introduce a new kind of beauty, such as this doll.

  1. I think that our country tends to over-exaggerate or close off beauty as just one thing. I am so happy that young girls can grow up with this new doll, Lammily, and hopefully grasp onto a larger concept of what is beautiful. (Elizabeth Muscari p6)

  2. I think that this doll is great. However, the idea of a perfect woman is already ingrained in our heads. Children might still consider this doll ugly, but I think that if we start anew with a new generation Lammily will go a long way.

  3. I think that this goes to show that we cannot let culture define what we believe because it is constantly changing its mind. It is not constant.
