Steffanie Wheat, a resident of the recently rendered "infamous" town, Ferguson, Missouri, protested at the white house with a sign reading "I Love Ferguson." After the murder of African-American teenager, Michael Brown, Ferguson, Missouri has been labeled as an extremely racist town. However, Wheat (a caucasian woman), having lived in Ferguson for many years, is married to an African-American man and has an adopted black son. Wheat argues that Ferguson, Missouri is actually not as hostile to African Americans as the media has portrays it as. Wheat believes that her demonstration will show that not all people living in Ferguson, Missouri see the world in black and white; she wants to show that people like her are misrepresented in the media.
This demonstration is a prime example of a person exercising their Constitutional right to free speech. Because of this law, Wheat was able to challenge the views of the popular media in hope to convey her message. This article was written not only to show others that Ferguson, Missouri is not solely a town socially divided by race, but also to show the public how free speech can be used to make an argument. Additionally, this article alludes to the racial disputes that have continued to occur throughout history.
