#ThanksMichelleObama -Hadassah Lai

All around the country, students have been posting pictures of their school lunches on social media with the sarcastic hashtag #ThanksMichelleObama. The pictures consist of lunches that range from mysterious mush to a solid that is unidentifiable. The students are protesting that because of Michelle Obama's new campaign of making school lunches healthy, they are being fed unappetizing food like that. Although many students have been bashing Mrs. Obama, students have written back against these posts saying that the students should not be criticizing school lunches if they are able to pack their own lunches. One student fought back and wrote that he is completely able to pack his own lunch, however if the food he is getting from the cafeteria is considered healthy, there is a huge problem. Another student posted a picture of his lunch, that was not too bad. It consisted of a slice of pizza, a juice box, and half a grapefruit. He claimed that not every lunch is bad and that people are just overreacting in his caption.

I think that different schools and cafeterias have different foods. Yes, I agree that some schools do not a very good job in preparing their food for the students. They do not do their job very well, and this should be corrected. I do not think that students should bash Michelle Obama, for she is trying to make improvements in schools, she did not mean anything bad. Although healthy food is encouraged, schools should try to make their meals appetizing and well presented.

  1. Michelle Obama does not control the lunch plans of ever single school in the country. The schools have a certain level of nutrition they must reach, what ever food they provide doesn't matter as long as its approved. There are much more efficient ways the kids could be discussing their distaste. If they talk to their district and explain their issue they could make a difference, They exercised their right of free speech, but depending on how they use it will prove the weight their words hold.

  2. Teenagers are very sarcastic, and it shows through this hashtag. Like Madeline said, Mrs. Obama's plan is all-encompassing, and a very generalized campaign to encompass the entire nation. It is up to specific states, counties, school districts (aka local powers) to decide the lunch menu.
