Barbie Breakthrough- by Rachel Devine (6th)

Recently, a new barbie named "Lammily" has been created by a man named Nickoly Lamm. This new doll is the oppostite of what Barbie is supposed to look like; it actually has realistically sized features. Lamm's idea came from him growing tired of kids all around the world comparing themselves to the plastic, skinny barbie dolls. His new "Lammily" has proportions based off of those recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the doll even come with sticker packs that include moles, pimples, cellulite, tattoos, and more. The responses that people are giving these dolls are all positive.

While this article might not seem important nationally, it is. Something as simple are the iconic barbie doll has a lot of influence over thousands and thousands of children throughout the country. The message that this new doll gives is very powerful; normal is beautiful and it isn't fair to compare yourself to a doll that would be probably 5 ft 9 in and 90 lbs in real life. It's about time someone recreated barbie and I think this will improve girls' self esteem everywhere.

  1. I also find this to be very great news. It will give girls of all ages everywhere the message that imperfections are okay and it is what makes them who they are.

  2. This is an interesting way to challenge the beauty standards that our society has accepted over time. I think this will encourage people to embrace "realistic" beauty in a new way.

  3. I think its wonderful that young girls can grow up playing with a toy that has a positive body image message. This will have a great impact on young girls and show them realistic ideas of the body.
