Suspects found and charged for park shooting in Chicago by Celeste Robbins

Bryon Champ, 21, and Kewane Gatewood, 20 have been charged in connection with a shooting last week at a Chicago park that injured 13 people, including a 3-year-old boy, Chicago officials announced Monday night. They were charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in the shooting Thursday at Cornell Square Park on Chicago's southwest side. Champ has prior weapons charges. He was convicted in July 2012 on charges of illegal use of a weapon by a felon and sentenced to Cook County Jail's boot camp. Champ is a recognized gang participant, according to authorities. Specialists say as many as three people opened fire Thursday on a basketball court in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Among those injured were 3-year-old Deonta Howard, who is recuperating from surgery after being shot near an ear, along with two teenagers. The assailants fired more than twelve rounds from an assault-style rifle, police have said. In all, 13 people were shot. None of them suffered life-threatening injuries. They believe the shooting was gang-related, as several gang members were hurt, although it's not yet clear who the intended target was. Through Sept. 15, police say they've documented 306 murders and 1,402 shooting cases this year. That's down 20 and 22 percent, respectively, from the identical period in 2012. According to new figures released Monday, Police say overall violent crime is down about 15 percent. According to these statistics, the crime rates have dropped, but they are still very high compared to some of the rest of the country. This, in my opinion is pretty crazy. I guess we all just wish the world could be more peaceful.. but, we are human and we like to debate about anything.
