Sarah Klein- Countdown: GOP unity frays as shutdown grows near

House Republicans scaled back their demands to delay the nation's health care law Monday night as the price for essential federal funding with a threatened government shutdown imminent. However, President Barack Obama and Democrats rejected the proposals as quickly as they were made.  Democrats remained steadfast in rejecting the proposals of the quavering Republicans.

The stock market dropped on fears that political tensions between the White House and the GOP would escalate. Analysts suggest that no great damage would occur to the national economy as long as the shutdown didn't last for more than a few days. In these few days, however, thousands of Americans would be at the least inconvenienced by the absence of the government and all the programs it sponsors.
