Curtis Reeves is known by his friends and neighbors as a kind gentleman and an retired cop. This all changed this weekend when he went to see a showing of The Lone Survivor at a local movie theater. A man, named Oulson, near Reeves was texting his daughter during the show, and several arguments ensued. Reeves eventually left the theater to find a manager, and, returning without one, began to argue with Oulson, until Oulson threw his popcorn at Reeves, and Reeves pulled out his gun and shot Oulson and his wife, who had put her hand in front of his chest to protect him just before he was shot. A police officer in the theater at the time kept Reeves in his seat and made sure he could not use his gun anymore. Two nurses, who were in the theater as well, performed CPR until the paramedics arrived. Oulson died, but his wife survived, though she was shot through the hand. People should not bring guns to movie theaters. People should respect each other
This very frightening, especially from an ex-cop.

Dang this makes me think twice before using my phone in the theater; or doing anything else for that matter. This goes to show you that people are crazy. When I go to the movies I'm going to sit and eat my candy quietly.

Really? We're killing people because they were texting during a movie? Yes it's distracting, but it's not worth a life.
ReplyDeleteWow. Texting during a movie totally deserves for someone to be shot. First world problems...
ReplyDeleteThis is a prime example why people shouldn't be allow to talk on the phone on airplanes, no matter what new air laws say.
ReplyDeleteThis is shocking. From the way people's anger controls them, to the policemen's handling of the incident. This is a lesson that teaches us to pick our battles. If someone is texting nearby, it is OK to get annoyed (preferably the annoyance kept to yourself) but to have a full fledge argument over it that results in a shooting is beyond unnecessary. We need to be careful to not let our anger control us and realize that texting in a movie theater is a minor in a life of majors.
ReplyDeleteI hate that society has come to this. I have talked to some people who strongly support guns. Some of them are ridiculous. I was joking about some guy fighting him (like a light hearted wrestle fight), and I was comparing their sizes. And the guys response was "I don't care how big he is... I'd shoot him."
ReplyDeletePeople don't understand how valuable life it. I think that needs to change.
What could have caused Reeves to snap? From what the people who knew him said, he seemed to be a relatively okay person. You'd think that a (former) police officer would have more self control and rationality. But obviously he had a terrible sense of judgement if he shot someone over something as petty as texting. I feel sorry for the victim's daughter, because now she'll grow up without a father.
ReplyDeleteImagine how scary it must have been to be in the movie theatre at the time. and why did the dude not just use the officer when he couldn't find the manager?
