This Saturday a young boy, living with his grandparents, was asked to clean his room. His response was to get his grandfathers gun and shoot his grandmother. As his grandfather was helping his grandmother and calling 911, the boy fatally shot himself in his room. The article didn't give any background on the child's birth parents or how he had access to the firearm. No one in the neighborhood has expressed any previous signs of violence shown by the child.
This article was very short and purely informational for the general public. It was from ABC, which I consider to be a very reputable source and the author didn't express any signs of bias or personal opinion. This was a very unfortunate incident, but, hopefully, we can learn from it. One of the only things in this situation that seems easily improvable is the child's access to the firearm. We probably won't ever know the whole story behind the household dynamic, but, nevertheless, there should never be a weapon of that power anywhere near a child. In some instances, people might get carried away with their right to own that kind of power and forget how dangerous it is and sometimes it's an issue of mistrust. Another error of our nation which may have enhanced the incident's brutality is the idea that showing vulnerability is showing weakness. In my opinion, this is not true, because if you feel strong enough to share your inner self with someone you have found someone you can truly trust and are able to truly trust yourself, which takes a lot of work. Maybe the child had been harboring feelings but was too afraid to express them either due to feeling less than or fear of punishment. This story can, unfortunately, be related to another case of parental figures being hurt by their children in the case of the King brothers.

I definitely agree on your opinion that people can get carried away and in some way abuse their power, and the fact that this was a young kid is also mind blowing. For kids, they should never even have contact or control over that powerful of a weapon. Thank you for sharing this! -Paige McManaman
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree, this is a shocking tragedy, and shows how even those who do not show signs of violence may be facing internal conflict.
ReplyDeleteI agree , this event is very tragic, but hopefully it can be informative to others and we can learn from it. Great job! -Karsyn Kelly
ReplyDeleteIt is terrible that this incident happened. The child should not have been able to access a weapon this lethal. Unfortunately in the circumstances that we are in right now, there is not enough emphasis on the importance of protecting our children as well as ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really tragic story but hopefully it teaches us that sometimes we take meaningless little things to serious. Its really shocking because this was a kid!! It’s crazy to know he got ahold of a weapon and shot himself just so that he couldn’t clean his room. -Lesly Marquez
ReplyDeleteThis really shows the magnitude of having firearms in your home. It’s is someone 2nd amendment right to own a gun, but if you do you have to be responsible and keep it locked up.
