Nazi Salute in Photo Will Not Be Punished- Gracie Zytynski

Wisconsin students appeared to be standing outside of the Sauk County Courthouse in downtown Baraboo with one arm raised, palms down and elbows locked straight. According to the article, the students doing the Nazi salute will not be punished. The superintendent, Lori Mueller of the Baraboo School District said they could not punish the students because it goes against their First Amendment rights. After the image was posted on Twitter on November 11 many people were outraged. In response, the mayor said that he has failed to show the communities inviting attitude.

This article was written on November 24 by Christina Caron apart of the New York Times. This article targeted all to inform of this awful photo. This connects to the First Amendment which says we have the freedom of speech, petition, press, assembly, and religion. The students in this picture could not be punished because they have the freedom of speech. This article is important because it shows how we use our Constitution to prove if something or someone needs to be punished. In all, I feel that the people should have had a small punishment, like a detention just to show them that what they did was wrong.

  1. I read about this story, and think it's so ridiculous that these students won't be punished for their actions. I disagree when you said that the students should only have a small punishment. Them making that hand gesture is traumatizing to many people of color, and I know if I saw that picture I would feel threatened. This isn't just a matter of free speech.. This issue has to do with students feeling safe at their own school, and I think they deserve to face bigger consequences than detention for what they did. - Maya Davis
