Daviah Harrison-What parents should know about the 'huge epidemic' of vaping

This article was written by Wayne Drash on Saturday November 17,2018. Vaping has increased tremendously among high schoolers and middle schoolers since last year. The Juul tobacco company received market share with an assortment of flavors, high nicotine content, and devices that look like USB drives. Juul is now restricting flavor products while only selling them to adults 21 and older on its secure website. This was not Juuls intention. Juul was designed to help adult smokers who were trying to switch from regular cigarettes. This nicotine addiction can cause many health effects including, "mild reductions in cognitive function in the prefrontal cortex, leading to poor decision-making,reduced impulse control, increases mood disorders such as anxiety and depression." It is not difficult to buy Juul online, resulting in enormous sales and increasing use among youth. The long-term health effects of Juul are unknown and that is the scary part.

This article was written for parents to show how concerned they should be about their child. This reminds me of the Temperance Movement in the 1800s since they did everything in their power to prevent alcohol abuse and this eventually led to prohibition. The sale and use of alcohol was illegal from 1920-1933 but it was a failure. Hopefully the restrictions that are happening with Juul will help lower the amount of kids that are using it. This is dangerous and could effect your future in more ways than what you can imagine,so be careful.

  1. I think this is something that parents should be informed about. It is such a big influence in today's society and parents should know how to see the signs about and what the effects are.
