Homeless man scammed by couple - Sloan Daley

This story involves what everyone thought was a homeless man from Philadelphia and a married couple from New Jersey.
Johnny Bobbitt, who was homeless, gave his last $20 to Kate McClure, a stranded motorist in Philadelphia in November last year, to help her get gas. To thank him, McClure, 28, and her boyfriend, Mark D'Amico, 39, created a GoFundMe account to raise funds for Bobbitt. Around 14,000 people donated to the campaign, which brought in more than $400,000 overall. Although, investigators came to know that this was a scam. The strange part is, is that they may not have have gotten caught, however the couple turned themselves in just a few days ago. The purpose was clear and genuine in the beginning, until the couple started stealing the money and keeping it for themselves. The couple is now facing charges.

This story reminds me of many other scams. One of them being the Air bnb scams. People would post pictures of fake houses for an unbelievable price, and people would pay for it. Once the seller had the money, they would cancel it and move on and do it again. This has unfortunately been something that has been going on for a while now. Hopefully since technology is so advanced it will be easier to prevent scams.

  1. That is terrible. You know that they started to feel bad because they ended up turning themselves in.
