Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a holiday classic. Now viewers are starting to notice and comment on the issues they have with the film. Some of these comments include that the film is problematic and features sexism, bullying and bigoted behavior.
Upon watching the video provided for the article, I'll give them sexism and I’ll also acknowledge the fact that there is bullying and bigoted behavior present, but the whole point of the film is the bullying and bigoted behavior. Homophobia? I'm not sure about that. The viewers (children) are supposed to feel sympathy for Rudolph and question why appearance should constitute bullying… hence the bullying. The purpose of the film, from my perspective, is essentially to embed anti-racism themes in children so it is necessary for bigoted behavior to take place. It is kind of the whole point. However, there is one point the article had that I do agree with. It is the point that Rudolph was only accepted when it turned out that he could be exploited. That one I agree with. I think as time progresses, people find more and more things to have problems with. Some of these things are productive changes, but others, such as this, are not really that important. It is a children's holiday movie that was made in the 60s. It doesn't really compare to say the post-civil war women's rights movements or current issues on immigration. On the other hand, the progressivism of the current day is reflected in finding different issues with the ways of the past. This is the same during the time when people decided that slavery wasn't morally sound, for example, and then slowly eradicated as much racist popular culture and slang as possible. Maybe this is just the natural social progression of humans… but there are still better things to focus on than Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

I completely agree with you and i do think the Rudolph is about him being accepted when it turned out he could be exploited. And i also agree that it doesn't relate to the civil war and women's right's movements.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you as well. Bullying and discrimination is what this movie is trying to teach these kids not to do. Everyone should be able to learn from this movie. Lily Philips
ReplyDeleteEverything has multiple ways of looking at and we can't turn everything in the world around just to fit today's politics. This movie was made in the 1960's when the political climate was completely different from today's and we can't ignore the original point of the movie, which was stop bullying.
