Dozens of Migrants Arrested After Crossing US-Mexican Border- adriana chavez

https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/26/us/san-ysidro-port-of-entry-migrant-arrests/index.html

Summary:
Over 6,000 migrants spent weeks on foot trekking through Mexico in an attempt to reach the United States. On Sunday, about 500 migrants reached Tijuana in order to cross into California and hopefully into San Diego. However, things took a turn for the worst. 69 were arrested for illegally crossing the border and Tijuana police arrested 39 on the Mexican side. However, as they were rushing to cross, authorities on the US side used tear gas to force them to retreat, with many of them being families with small children. Trump then claimed that many of the migrants were "stone cold criminals," with no evidence to support that, and threatened to close the border permanently if needed.

Analysis:
This article was published by CNN on Sunday afternoon and was updated this afternoon with new information on the event. I had some prior knowledge about this, such as the hundreds of thousands of migrants marching from all over Central America, such as the Honduras, Guatemala, etc. This article can connect to the many immigration issues the United States had to undergo in the past century. The subject of immigration in the nation has gotten more and more controversial, and much worse as time went by. The fact that they used tear gas to drive them away is unthinkable and horrible to do. Authorities stated that it was used for the safety of the American agents against the migrants, but no major threats were given from their side. Most migrants were families consisting of small children, who all fled in fear that they were going to die due to the toxic gas that they had inhaled.

  1. This is just upsetting to read. America is thought of as the land of opportunities, a haven that people can escape. In reality, it's only that when it's convenient for us. In 1924, an immigration act was put into place, and part of it was because citizens saw groups of immigrants as competition for jobs. I actually looked of "Immigration act of" and then a bunch of different years popped up in the search. This just shows how America constantly portrays itself as the land of opportunities, but it cuts those opportunities off to immigrants.

    1. I couldn't agree more with Miranda. The fact that America is founded upon a foundation of immigration and now people who are just like our forefathers are being turned away from what should be a welcoming new home for them is incredibly upsetting.
