Nurse Who Contracted Ebola- Jazmin Garcia (2nd Period)

Nina Pham, a 26 year old nurse, is the first patient to contract the Ebola virus while on U.S. soil. She's being treated in Dallas and it's said that the transmission resulted from an unknown "breath of protocol" in treating Duncan when he returned to Texas Presbyterian a second time. Pham graduated from Texas Christian University in 2010, but apparently the 4 year program didn't offer dangerous infectious disease work. Although she passed the Texas Board of Nursing registration exam, she didn't receive her certificate in Critical Care Nursing until August 1st, a little less than 2 months before Duncan arrived ill with Ebola at Texas Health Presbyterian.

I feel like this can relate to APUSH because Ebola is a huge disease outbreak. Although not a lot of people are dying from it yet, I'm nervous that a lot of people will pretty soon unless we find a cure. This is similar to the Black Death that happened in Europe. It didn't kill many civilians all at once; it took years for it to spread throughout Europe. It could've been prevented and possibly stopped if a cure was found but because there wasn't much advancement in medicine, not much could be done. I hope we find a cure soon so we can stop this before it gets worse and out of control.

  1. I also wrote on this topic and I agree that additional action needs to be taken to ensure that no other individuals come in contact with the Ebola virus. Healthcare professionals need to be monitored for any beginning symptoms of the virus to stop the spread to the public.

  2. It's terrible how she is blamed for breaking protocol even though there wasn't a protocol set in place. Hopefully they are soon instilled for the health of this woman and other endangered nurses.
