In the recent Celebrity news, Jennifer Lawrence was a victim of the hack that led to her nudes being leaked onto the internet.
Her statement was "It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime," she told VF's Sam Kashner. "It is a sexual violation. It's disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change." In a country where it is our right to freedom of speech and press, we seemed to have strayed from the original purpose that was intended to keep our nation free from a corrupt government. As a whole we united to break free from the abuse of power that neglected our natural rights, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. In turn we, Americans, have abused this power and have gone as far as to violating our own personal rights. When someone takes any one of those things away from us we have a right to fight back and change laws against it. Our body, mind, and voice are things that belong to us, so we should have a choice as to what we want to do with them.In trails against sex crimes the first question that is ever asked is, "Did they give consent?" In any case involving hacking into one's personal life, one's consent is often left out of the equation. So unless we take these matters to court, our liberty and right to property, ourselves, will be but written words with no enforcement. If it happened to you, wouldn't you feel as though your rights were meaningless?
