A Southern Mississippi fraternity's yearly scavenger hunt for new pledges occurred early last week - one of the tasks was to go to the local zoo and take a photo next to a swan. One student decided to go for a Chilean pink flamingo instead, so he scaled the 10-foot fence and placed a t-shirt over the bird. He then proceeded to attempt to take the bird with him and in the process the bird's leg was broken. Not knowing what to do, he left the bird on a bicycle trail where it was discovered later that day. The bird's injuries were so severe that it had to be euthanized. Another bird also died from the damage caused by being hit by one of the students while they were at the zoo. The school's Delta Mu chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity has been indefinitely suspended for their actions. Devin Nottis, 19, was arrested and charged with grand larceny as well.
This article was written by Michael Martinez, Carma Hassan and Amanda Watts on October 11th for CNN. Before reading this article, I had heard of fraternities being suspended for bad behavior but I hadn't heard of a case such as this. I was surprised by how quickly the university responded to this event - seeing as they immediately suspended the fraternity. This article was written to inform the general public about the events that took place at this fraternity's rush disaster. I understand that we have to take into account the high possibility that the students were intoxicated when it occurred, but they deserved to face some sort of punishment regardless.

This is so... disturbing! It is so selfish and inconsiderate of this guy. He crossed the line, trying to be funny and trying to get attention. The penalties are not hash and well deserved.
ReplyDeleteUnbelievably ignorant. I cannot believe that he let that happen to the bird. I hope that he understands and feels remorse on how bad the incident was that he let occur. -Blythe Taylor 3rd period
