Bishop says gays have gifts to offer the Church - Lizette Ayala

In a document released Monday, Catholic bishops expressed new feelings of tolerance towards homosexuality and divorce. It is thanks to Pope Francis famous line, "Who am I to judge?" that the church's rigid stance on gay unions has become more tolerable. (to the church) The document, which was released half way through the meetings, mentions the gifts and qualities of gay Catholics to the church. It called on all pastors and members of Catholicism to avoid any derogatory behavior/language that hold the potential of offending them. In addition to varied support around the world, their has also been backlash towards the document by conservative Catholics.

The document is very similar to the decriminalizing of homosexuality in India by the Delhi High Court on July 2, 2009. The ancient Hindu scriptures describe the homosexual condition to be biological, and although the scripture gives guidance to parents on how to avoid procreating a homosexual child, it does not condemn the child as unnatural. These two situations go hand in hand because they are both giving people of a religion the right to choose who and what they want to be and separating that from their churches.

  1. It is very refreshing to see a new perspective in the Church! I think Pope Francis' tolerance will inspire universal acceptance of homosexuals and other societal outcasts around the globe.

  2. It is wonderful that there is a positive change in the Church! This will make churches seem more welcoming for all people instead of shutting people out. This is a fantastic thing.

  3. I'm glad Pope Francis is finally respecting and treating homosexuals as equal people. But I am very curious on how people will react. How will strict conservative Catholics take this? Will they begin to accept homosexuals as well, or will they begin to oppose and hate Pope Francis for going against the bible? (Miguel Dones 6th)
