“Kate Winslet Strikes Back at Pregnancy Critics”
Kate Winslet has recently welcomed her new son into the world. This happy occasion was, however, tainted by remarks she received regarding the pregnancy and the fact that she gave her son her own surname, rather than that of her husband, among other things. She responded to these critics with a mock apology, saying that "It's easy to be judgmental until you know someone's truth".
The reactions she received reflect American views on the choices women make regarding important aspects of their lives. It would appear to the outside observer that this country is taking steps forward in views on many things; marriage equality is on the rise in some states, pot legality is on the rise in one state. However, American thoughts about the decisions women make remain remarkably outdated, as is exemplified by Kate Winslet's situation. The public opinions floating around her children are unfortunate not only because of their content, but also simply because these critics believe they're in a position to judge her choices.

I don't think they should judge Kate by the way she wants to raise her child. There is no law that says you have to change your maiden name or change your child's name. They should not make judgments about her.
ReplyDeleteI heard that she wanted all of her children to have the same last name, and since her other two children had her surname, she wanted this one to have the same name as well. It seems to me that she did this in order to make sure the children felt united and didn't feel different from one another.
