Beyoncé Stumps for Gender Equality - Victor Ragsdale 4th Period

BEYONCÉ: Modern-Day Feminist

The Civil Rights Movement would not have been as successful if it was only supported by Black Americans. Its success can be attributed to people of all different colors. So why would we expect to see gender equality if we only want women to support feminism? Beyoncé, arguably the face of modern-day feminism, presents this idea in new her essay Gender Equality is a Myth!

Of course! If feminists actually plan on seeing gender equality, the movement requires more than just the support of women. If all it took we're the support of women for gender equality, it would have happened years ago!

So is gender equality really possible? If so, could it happen any time soon? What defines gender equality? When do we cross the line in gender equality? Tell me what you think in the comments below...

  1. You would be the one to do your current event on the Queen lol. I do agree that men need to be involved as well. People just think feminists are a bunch of men-hating women...which is not the case. We just want the same rights and level of respect men have. I mean really, Who Runs the World? That's right we do.

    1. I know that all feminists are not a bunch of men-hating women, but as a male at Booker T, I can say that there are many negative comments about men made by the female population. A lot of my family either own or work in the salon industry, and as a result, I have spent a fair amount of my childhood in hair salons. I can say that time and time again, that men are called, "dogs, careless, insensitive....ALL THE SAME!" I think the general statements made against men (which are more often than the stereotypes against women) would need to stop in order for men to feel welcome to the feminist movement. Not to say that the male population would need some improvements as well. In order for gender equality to happen, both the FEMALE and male population would have to make some internal improvements. Gender equality would actually mean we have to be equal. As a HUGE Beyoncé fan, I love "Who Runs the World? (Girls)", but if we really want to be equal, the answer to the question would have to be WE run the world (as in the entire world itself, not just the men, just the women, but the people that try and make a positive mark on the world).

  2. Lolss...Okay so this is interesting. Beyonce def is a modern day feminist. And she is right...women's equality will never happen is women don't let men try and help them. If the Americans didn't allow the french to help them with the Revolutionary War we'd still belong to England. I think the problem is that some men don't want to help, they just want to try and cover up the problem while giving the illusion that they care. It's up to women to use that God given tuition to figure out who's who lolss.

    1. I agree that some men don't want to help. But, if you are a feminist, the assumption is that you don't like the idea of men "ruling the world." If that's the case, you can't expect men to be okay with women ruling the world. If feminists want equality, it has to be equality. Nothing more. Feminists would have to get rid of the idea of ruling the world, we would have to work together, men and women. We have to get of the ideas that men are better, and that women are better. Whoever works the hardest will be the best. We need to get of the thoughts that "women are always right" and that "all men are the same" (FYI women are wrong sometimes and sorry but maybe just the guys you choose are the same (if all the guys you date get on your nerves, the common denominator is not the gender of your choices, but the chooser, YOU!!)). Hope you get the point I'm trying to make...

  3. I think, in reality, people take all situations to far. There will always be stereotypes against every group. Like you said, women calling men "dogs" or vice versa slut shaming. I think in a big way women have created these stereotypes against men as a way of defending themselves. Women have always been seen as inferior in western society. We have grown up in a culture where women are "weaker" and "more submissive" than men.
This has instilled a sense of inequality in many women's minds. Unfortunately, there are enough women supporting this inequality (for tradition or whatever it may be) that the fight for equality has been altered. They are supporting men's superiority, much as women need men to support their equality. I believe since legally, women have not been able to achieve equality they have brought it to a level that they can control (trying to bring men down the same way they have been brought down). I don't think there is ever going to be a completely equal playing ground for genders because it has been drilled into the minds of society that there are gender roles (also the biological differences). However, this means that legal equality is all the more important. For example, what needs to change is the fact that women have such a hard time getting birth control when insurance companies cover Viagra with no complaint. That is the kind of legal equality needed.

  4. Gender equality is definitely possible and correction. ITS ALREADY HAPPENING. Without all the sprinkles, I find one thing under the rubble, everyone is equal. Yes. we all have our strengths and I think that is one thing everyone needs to accept. WE have gotten to the mindset that just because one is better than the other, we are superior and till our society deems that to be clear and realize this minuscule little deal, we won't portray anyone as equal to anybody straight up. Now, they are certain things women just shouldn't do because we are women (i.e. like carrying huge boxes or something) but then there are things that men shouldn't do. I most definitely agree with the Queen that gender equality is definite a myth . WE have just created traditions and regulations that falsely tend to separate the two genders. Also, I dont think that this whole feminism thing would exist if women weren't treated equal in the first place, but now its here. What goes around comes back around right?;) Feminism is slowly dying out because as our society is modernizing, I think we are realizing that is doesn't really matter so much and how stupid it is to tell someone no although that happens every day. But any way, I think I would just say to all of this, "laissez-faire".
