Vincent Reid- Chinese extreme Gender Inbalance in the Air

Female Chinese Pilots are Pushing for Equality

China currently contains one of the greatest gender imbalances in the world within the civilian aviation industry, with only 713 female pilots in comparison to 55,052 male pilots within the country.  Women are often overlooked to men due to long standing beliefs on gender roles within Chinese society, along with the fact that women receive long maternity leave that may reach up to 5 years with the recent removal of the one-child policy.  However, women have begun seeking equal reviewal for aviation professions along with men, and with Boeing predicting a great increase in the need for pilots in China over the upcoming years, companies are finally beginning to see women as a suitable option.

This article was written by Reuters, who reports the pure facts of an event or development, allowing the reader to form a non biased opinion on the situation at hand.  I believe this to be an extremely important development to help close the gender gap across the world.  This article also highlights for us in our western focused world that these innovations and developments are occurring everywhere, not just here.  I also appreciate the way the woman the article centered on, Han, expressed her opinion, statin how she simply wished for equal consideration in the job deciding process.

I believe there is a comparison to be drawn between this struggle in the air happening in China presently, and the movement towards implementing women in the workplace in the first industrial revolution.  The women in both situations have had to overcome long standing traditions in their societies over the ever standing belief in male superiority and male dominance and the predominant belief that the place for a woman was in the home.  For both women, one of the biggest problems was even getting hired in the first place, often being overlooked for their male counterparts.  And if history is any sign, women will be able to secure their right in the end.

  1. This is incredibly interesting to me, as I realize that I had never thought about the inequality of pilots. While I never thought this to be an issue before, it arises some other thoughts about possible gender inequality in other industries.

  2. You know, maybe there just aren't as many women who want to be pilots. Was that possibility mentioned in the article? No.

    1. Less women wanting to be pilots is an indication of young women only seeing men being pilots, so they become discouraged and believe its only a boy's job. That means there's a lack of empowerment in China, not just tons of women who decide piloting just isn't their thing.

  4. Very interesting!! I’ve one thought about gender inequality for being a pilot one time before. This reminded me of the musical Come From Away about 911. The best pilot is a woman and I remember thinking I love how they decided to make this a woman’s role. I understand that this is in China, so is the inequality higher in this way than in the US??
