San Diego State University is planning on creating a course called “Black Minds Matter”- a course informing on how black men are undervalued in academics.
Craig DeLuz, a gun rights activist, says that there should be no course which includes speakers from a movement that creates violence.
"The biggest concern is they are offering a course based on the Black Lives Matter movement which has promoted violence and segregation and has really little to do with education, let alone presenting a positive image of education," DeLuz said.
SDSU says that Black Minds Matter focuses on social justice and democratic schooling.
~ Personally, I think Black Mind Matter is an incredibly progressive idea. Social Justice has been one of the biggest issues in America in the past few years, and many more years to come. Educating students on current, important movements is a fantastic idea. Misunderstanding is often the root of problems- so informing the youth seems like the best way to avoid violence. I'm not quite sure why anyone would disagree. Mr. DeLuz seems to be misinformed himself, because the Black Lives Matter movement is fighting to equality (the opposite of segregation...) and promotes peace and unity between all races.
I completely agree on your opinion about how misunderstanding is often the root to problems. I feel a course like this could change the perspective of many white people who have the wrong perception of black people across America. I feel that lack and fear of discussing race with others is holding us back from socially progressing and a class like this could spark discussion, which hopefully will result in positive change.
ReplyDeleteYes you're so right. It's time to start having the tough conversations about equality with our friends and family. I think Black Minds Matter will lead the way in that perspective.
DeleteYou're 100% correct. Our inability to listen to each other and accurately understand what these peaceful and helpful groups like BLM want to do is the root of our problems, also I think their is a lack of compassion in people who just are incapable of putting themselves in others places to understand.
ReplyDeleteI love your commentary on this article and completely agree! Courses like this are going to change our history for the better. The Black Lives Matter movement has been so misrepresented for too long and I truly think this will aid in changing peoples minds.
ReplyDeleteCourses like these are helping our society take a step in the right direction. It helps people understand what groups like BLM really want.
