Hurricane Irma has been stealing our oceans! (Madeline Sabedra)

We have all heard how powerful and strong Hurricane Irma is. However, I was still very surprised to hear that Irma is "stealing" our oceans. Irma is so strong that it has been able to push the water away from shorelines in the Bahamas and the Gulf Coast of Florida. Many boats are now sitting in mud rather than water. This hasn't been seen since 2012. (Hurricane Sandy) This has been happening because with the approaching storm comes strong winds blowing from the northeast. These strong winds have the power to push water out of the shallow parts of bays and harbors! A storm surge is expected to occur. The wind direction will eventually shift, and water levels will increase rapidly. The rise in water has the potential to be life threatening, so many warnings are being sent out.

This is a very important article. We need to be aware of what hurricane Irma is causing. I personally had no idea that hurricanes had enough power to pull oceans away from the shoreline. People have been going close to the shoreline in awe because they do not know of the dangers to come. (The possibility that the water could rise 10-15 feet at any moment.) For this reason, this is a very important informational article.

  1. I agree with you in how surprising this is the years that I have been alive, which aren't that many. The fact that a hurricane can cause so much damage and control the water to the point of taking it away from its land is terrifying.
