Nigeria is one of the worlds largest oil producers. Because they have all this oil, the people have been illegally selling it, and making a huge profit. This may sound like a smart idea, but the Nigerian army believes it's not. They don't agree with the idea, so they come around each town, find the tons and tons of stored oil in containers, and they slash the bags and puncture the boxes.
I personally think that the "Nigerian Delta", a group of people who are part of the army, are overanalyzing the situation. When you think about it, by cutting open and letting free the oil, they're simply wasting it. So what if people sell oil so it can be put to good use, it's not hurting anyone! It only hurts the environment when they send it flooding through the land.
Back in 2010, the BP oil spill happened. Many animals suffocated and the ocean was polluted. The fact that Nigeria has this contained oil is a huge benefit; it doesn't mess with the earths surface, and it is easier to keep. The oil spill created this huge mess that took a very long time to clean, and it was hard to recover from.
