After 8 Nursing Home Deaths, Florida Issues Emergency Rules to Protect Elderly

On September 16th Florida governor, Rick Scott, announced new health requirements, in order to help the states' elderly populations during emergency situations. Due to Hurricane Irma the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills lost power. According to reports the center was not prepared to take precautions. Their generators were not kept up to date, so when the power was lost many patients suffered and eight even died. The families of these patients and the community as a whole were outraged: and justifiable so. The response from the community lead to the issuing of new nursing home required regulations, by the Scott administration. The regulations were put in place in hopes of ensuring the safety of patients.

The intended audience of this article is the nursing home community and its owners. Those in charge of these facilities are being informed of this tragedy so that the make an effective change. The elderly community is at risk, because of the poor leadership of those in charge. It is important to shed light on this unfortunate incident, because in order to fix a mistake, you must first know what the mistake was.

  1. Olivia Wall- That is awful that they were not properly prepared. This just goes to show just how important it is to have everything up to date incase of emergency, because eight of them died, and we would never want to put people in a kind of helpless situation.

  2. I'm so glad that they are making requirements to help the elderly. What happened to them is terrible. They need more assistance because they aren't physically strong enough to take care of themselves.

  3. That is terrible that eight people died, its ridiculous that they didn't take precautions sooner because they knew that the hurricane was coming and they didn't do anything to prevent things like that from happening again.

  4. The elderly are unable to take care of themselves much less in a hurricane. This place should have prepared for the hurricane when they knew it was coming.

  5. It is really important that we don't forget about the elderly and always make sure they are safe too.

  6. I believe in the hope of this article informing those in charge of nursing homes to inspire change because it certainly will, but also to inform other elderly peoples. I mean, this is Florida we are talking about. Plenty of people of the sameness age group who have not been sentenced to a nursing home yet will be sure to speak their minds and see to it in their ways that there is no chance such a devastating and disheartening thing is able to happen to anyone.
