Kathryn Hine-Four Boston College students attacked with acid in France

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/17/europe/france-acid-attack-us-tourists/index.html

Four American students studying abroad were attacked by a mentally unstable woman on Sunday in Marseilles, France. The women, identified as Courtney Siverling, Charlotte Kaufman, Michelle Krug, Kelsey Kosten, had acid thrown on them while at St. Charles Train station. Two of the women were rushed to the hospital and treated for burns after the attack took place, and the two others were in a state of shock. The students treated for burns have since been released and will be ok. the attacker was arrested and sent to a hospital as well.

This article made me think about how there is much need for care for the mentally unstable around the world. Most of the time if a person is mentally ill but homeless or poor they go untreated, which can lead to the person becoming a danger to themselves or others. There is as big a need for mental health care as there is for physical health care in America, and in many other countries across the world.

Attacks such as these have become fairly common in America within the past 15-20 years. Most school shootings are committed by untreated, severely mentally ill people. Just last May a mentally ill student at UT Austin who was involuntarily committed for treatment, but was not fully treated, stabbed multiple people at the school. In order for these events to stop or at least become less common, comprehensive mental heath help needs to be more widely available.

  1. I completely agree. I think the only way to provide more comprehensive health for people with mental health needs is to raise awareness about those needs. There's too many people who don't believe mental issues are real, or that they are as debilitating as they are.

  2. This really is proof we need to find help for the people who need it. Many mentally unstable individuals are sent to prison for their actions but why are they not treated for their uncontrollable illnesses? Less incidents like this would occur.

    1. Couldn't agree more. Kind of like gun violence! If we didn't have guns, there would be lots less incidents involving guns. But, that's another argument for a later time, LOL.
