Brooke Simpson: C.I.A. Wants Authority to Conduct Drone Strikes in Afghanistan for the First Time

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/15/us/politics/cia-drone-strike-authority-afghanistan.html

The C.I.A. wants to perform covert drone strikes in the war zones of Southeast Asia, a power which the association has not been granted before.  The C.I.A. is looking for President Trump's approval, but there is debate that the spy organization should not be given this kind of power, because of the fact that the C.I.A. can keep their missions secret.  Pentagon officials have concerns that the C.I.A. could harm civilians or United States troops, and not not admit it was them, another official says he sees no gain from adding the C.I.A. to the force, the military already conducts hundreds of air strikes a year.  However, General John W. Nicholson Jr., the top commander in Afghanistan, has wanted more power to his forces, and seems to be on board with the idea of the C.I.A. operating in the war zone as well.  Mike Pompeo, the C.I.A. director has said that the president has liked the idea and favors giving the C.I.A. approval, and the Defense Secretary hasn't refused the idea, so the C.I.A. might be sanctioned to operate in Afghanistan in the near future.

The article was written by Eric Schmitt and Matthew Rosenburg for the New York Times on September 15, 2017.  The article doesn't given any dates of meetings between C.I.A. officials and President Trump, but I think that the article is up to date.  I did not know that the C.I.A. was interested in gaining power in Afghanistan, so most of article was brand new to me.  The article was written for the American people interested in what kind of power the United States has in the Middle East right now.  It is not persuasive, it gives facts and other people's opinions, but I do not know what the authors' opinions are.  The purpose of the article is to inform people about the C.I.A.'s push to conducting drone strikes in the war zones of Southeast Asia, and that there are up and downsides to this.  It is important to know that a United States spy organization could be attacking places in Afghanistan, but without the knowledge of the general public, or anyone outside of the organization.  In the past, the C.I.A. has tried to deny the American military from being able to aid Pakistan, and now the American government could deny the C.I.A. from being able to carry out strikes against Afghanistan, the opposite of a past situation.

  1. Yeah, I have to say that the information within this article was really all new to me also but I think it's so interesting, all of these different hands of our government trying to justify itself into situations of interest. While I am still unsure of my favoring on this topic, I like that there is debate at all against the CIA because it has enough loopholes to sneak past in, in terms of making the general public aware of all they do and that people want justice for the lives and resources which could be put at unnamed risk when the CIA is involved in military affairs.
