In Virginia Charlottesville, on August 12th a group of white supremacists  marched in the University of Virginia against the idea of tearing down a Confederate statue. A few hundred men and women went to march with torches around the statue of Thomas Jefferson in protest. At least one person was arrested. There were numerous debates and petitions to take away the statue as well as many outside opinions on how poorly the protest was handled  and how disgusted they were by the many protesting for white supremacy.

I know this was a quite a while ago, however I thought that this was still very relevant. In my opinion, I think that this was a pointless protest, it's just a statue. They said that they weren't going to allow 'them' to erase their history. As if everyone could forget what those people did. This relates to history because, well first of all these statues represent all of the horrible things they did to the people of colour. Secondly, this kind of reminds me of the naive americans being mistreated by Columbus, yet he's rewarded for 'discovering'  North America but people constantly ignore how poorly he treated the Indigenous people.

  1. I agree. It's true that the past has happened, we can't deny that, but I think that taking down those statues will progress our country to become closer.

  2. The past is important, but do we really need to relive what our ancestors did?

  3. Preserving the past is definitely important but not when mistakes are looked to as a great time in history. I think it'd be okay for the statues to be in a museum so that it can represent 1 of the many mistakes America has made.

  4. I agree, leaving the statues just reminds us about Americas many cruel mistakes. We can't re write history but we shouldn't have to relive it.

  5. This event showcases the intolerance for diversity in America today. In my opinion, Trump's presidency has pushed alt-right conservatives to outwardly showcase their opinions, often in a dangerous way as seen in Charlottesville.

  6. I agree. These people they are defending are poster children of hatred and for those who still are consumed with a need to feel superior to other races. It's truly sad.

  7. i agree with heaven. i do think that these statues are very accurate in our history and that we should take accountability in our past, but that leaves no room for us to praise the wrong our ancestors did.
