New studies have shown that excessively sitting for long periods of time is a risk factor for early death. The study included about 8,000 adults and researchers came to the conclusion that the longer you sit without movement, the faster your risk of an early death increases. This concerns everyone, even if you do exercise because excessive sitting is poor for your health. Scientists recommend taking a five minute movement break every half hour, along with a moderate-intensity aerobic exercise for two and a half hours a week, and you should do muscle strengthening exercises two or more days a week. If you do all of these things, you will be less likely to die at an early age from excess sitting. One easy solution to this problem would be standing instead of sitting excessively, but studies have not yet shown that standing is healthier than sitting. So, for now if your job or lifestyle requires long hours of sitting, remember to take a movement break.
This is crazy! As students, we are sitting for long periods of time during class. This makes me think we should implement movement breaks in the classes where you do the most sitting. For example, on the days where we take notes all period, or on test days, we should take these small breaks to reduce our risk of an early death. Sitting excessively causes so many negative things, so I connected the risk of early death to the risk of getting diabetes. Both of these things can come from too much sitting, and not enough movement or exercise.

Wow!Maybe schools should consider a standing class room with the standing desks. This may help prevent the problem and also keep students from falling asleep during a long lecture.
ReplyDeleteNo way !! Now maybe the government or school system will reconsider ya sitting in desks for so long. I was actually thinking about this very thing recently. It’s crazy how we sit in the same spot for 8 hours doing nothing but moving a couple body parts. I Knew that wasn’t healthy !!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat?! This crazy! I had know idea what a huge impact repetitively sitting for long periods of time had on our bodies.
ReplyDeleteOlivia Wall - That is very interesting!! I know that studies show that it is very vital to get your expertise everyday so that you are not sitting, but I did not realize that that is a direct correlation to how sitting for too long is dangerous.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a good solution to this would be having at least one class a day in the Green Room, so that people can move around while they learn.
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting considering every single day we spend hours sitting at a desk. Standing desks would be a great idea or we can walk outside.
ReplyDeleteTeachers should know about this so that while we're in class we can stand up and stretch periodically.
ReplyDeleteThis is so crazy! I think teachers should take this in to play when writing their lesson plans. They should provide some more hands on interactive activities that require more time on your feet. This would already reduce this risk.
