Sam Blumberg- Current Events

Back in 2012, couple David Mullins and Charlie Craig went cake shopping for their wedding day. They decided to look into Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado- where owner Jack Phillips promises that "If you can think it up, Jack can make it into a cake!" When this couple asked for a wedding cake, Phillips told them that he didn't maker cakes for same-sex weddings due to his religious beliefs. The couple was humiliated, and the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)  represented them in their complaints against Phillips. A year later, Judge Robert Spencer, in accordance with the CCRD (Colorado Civil Rights Division), decided that the bakeshop had violated a law that doesn't allow businesses to refuse service due to a person's sexual orientation. This decision was appealed by the shop. Over the next few years, there were multiple rulings against Phillips, and the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal. But in July 2016, the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative legal nonprofit company, petitioned the Supreme Court to hear the case so that, "the government understands that its duty is to protect people's freedom to follow their beliefs." Recently, the Supreme Court decides that it will hear the case this fall.
This story has many different opinions associated with it so I decided to read two different articles with two conflicting opinions. Fox News, the more conservative resource, focuses more on the fight for freedom of speech. They connote that Jack Phillips had a right to refuse their business because it's his art and he didn't want to violate his religious beliefs. While my other resource focuses on the fight for equal rights. They say that the fact that he won't make them a cake is a big deal and is very demeaning. I think this is a very interesting case, because it take two ideas that our nation stands for and makes one of them have to come out on top.
