Kelsey Anderson, 17, was wearing a long-sleeved maroon top and blue jeans on Friday when the teacher told Anderson that "plus-sized women" need to shop at stores that sell plus-sized clothes,
The teacher allegedly added: "Smaller busted women could get away with more than larger busted women."
"Even if Kelsey was breaking dress code, the teacher was still in the wrong. At the end of the day, Kelsey's confidence was crushed and that's what matters. No student should ever be sexualized, body shamed or called out on something so personal in front of the whole class." Says Kelsey's classmate, Angel Oviedo.
Mariah Corben, another student, said she believes the teacher mentioned Anderson's breasts.
Anderson was "mortified" by the teacher's comments, which were made in front of her classmates.
Dress code is a common topic of dispute nowadays. First of all, Anderson was definitely IN dress code. Even if she wasn't, she should not have been ridiculed in front off the class. It is very upsetting, not to mention damaging to self worth. Being sexualized because of a larger chest is a terrifying experience anyways, but in front of EVERYONE? Really? Besides that, why is her teacher commenting on her breasts? Isn't that a bit ..problematic? Lastly, her teacher called her "plus sized"- although there is nothing wrong with that, kids are cruel. Anyone with at least a tiny bit of empathy should feel horrified.
Teachers need to take a training lesson or something about how to properly talk to students. Teachers have been really laid back about how they talk to the students and I think it is 100% unprofessional. This teacher had no clue how this statement would effect the student and they need to be more cautious.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher was definitely in the wrong here. Even if she wasn't in the correct dress code there is a way for the teacher to not talk like that.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher had no right to call her out in front of the class since she was in dress code. What this teacher is teaching is rape culture and this should not be tolerated.
