Madison Pollak// The White House tried to calm furious House Republicans. It didn't go well.

On Wednesday morning, President Trump came to the agreement on a deal proposed by democrats. The deal provides a 3-month extension to the debt ceiling tied to immediate aid for the victims of hurricane Harvey. President Trump struck the deal undermining GOP leaders, giving them no say or warning about the finalized agreement. Multiple house republicans were indignant, they expressed concerns about the future hindrance of tackling the debt ceiling in December.
Treasure secretary Steve Mnuchin and Trump’s budget chief Mick Mulvaney went to capital hill to calm infuriated republicans down.  Mnuchin addressed the situation poorly; he did not understand the frustrations among conservatives pertaining to raising the debt ceiling without spending cuts. Mnuchin attempted to appeal to house republicans by urging republicans “to vote for the debt ceiling for me”. This agitated house republicans who opposed clean debt limit extensions, resulting in exasperated anger and no progress gained to persuade house republicans to support agreement.

Deirdre Walsh, Lauren Fox, Jeremy Diamond and MJ Lee wrote this article, on Friday September 8th. The purpose of the article was to inform readers about the conflict within the Republican Party over Trump backing a deal proposed by democrats. Trump disregarded his own parties input and made the decision himself. The irony in this is he finally settled on an agreement with his opposing party, yet his own party is opposed to his final agreement. The action Trump made signifies him to be a weak leader for the party he represents, yet it shows he made the right choice to put hurricane Harvey victims before politics. Regarding whose side some agree with whether it’s democratic or republican, there are people in Houston who are struggling and are in need of immediate aid. I feel the Republican Party needs to put there conflicting views with democrats aside and focus on providing immediate aid to the hurricane Harvey victims who are suffering.

  1. I agree with all that you've said. It's entirely ridiculous that so much opposition is stemming from these political party conflicts. Trump made a compassionate decision for once and is immediately criticized by the republicans this time. It's literally so dumb.
