Katelyn Thompson-Trump Nominates Lawyers from Anti-LGBT ‘Religious Freedom’ Group to be Texas Federal Judges

On September 8th, news came in that Trump nominated lawyers from an Anti-LGBTQ 'Religious Freedom' group to be Texas Federal judges. Reminder, these jobs are for life. The nominees are Jeff Mateer and Matthew Kacsmaryk, lawyers who have spent their careers advocating for the advance of Anti-LGBTQ discrimination in employment, housing and places of business all under the guise of protecting religious liberties. In other words, according to Kathy Miller, of Texas Freedom Network, these nominations are "a clear signal that president trump intends to make our federal courts the place where civil liberties go to die." Mateer and Kacsmaryk must still be confirmed by the U.S. senate. Side note, neither one of these candidates have any judicial experience whatsoever. To reiterate earlier, in article 3 of the constitution, it states that these judges hold their office for life and can only be removed by impeachment. Impeachment might become the new political trend this coming year.

In terms of social progress America has come along way, it's unfortunate to see that slowly perish. I hope the senate views the nominees as unfit to serve as a federal judges and does not advocate such hatred to a minority group. If the nominees unfortunately get elected as federal judges, I expect that they keep there anti-lgbtq beliefs to themselves and not let that interfere in a professional environment from the time they serve as federal judges until they hopefully get impeached or decide to rescind.
ReplyDeleteReading this article made me sad because it just when things seem to be moving forward, it's like we were put back in the past. I wonder if the President is aware of their stances on LGBTQ issues and/or if he cares that they do. Also I liked how you stated the fact that neither judge has ever had judicial experience. Why are we promoting government officials who have never even proven that they can fulfill the job. I hope that this is not a continued trend in the next coming months.
