Henry Haas- Not so Peaceful Protest

A recent protest in Saint Louis resulted in many officers injured in the aftermath of a violent outburst in the protesters. The march was going seemlessly it seems, an officer posted on it before the outbreak, however in the evening the violence led to approximately 80 arrests by the St. Louis police force. One was noted saying that they are in full support of free and lenient rights when it comes to this sort of thing, however violence simply cannot be tolerated.
This raises a couple questions for me. On the one hand, the police force did their job calmly and professionally. This resulted in very few injuries in the incident. Some could say that they were limiting the protest, but I believe the actions taken were necessary for the protection of the people around them. I wonder how this may hurt or help the increasingly negative light towards police in this country. Only perspective will show the outcome.

  1. Do you think the officers could've handled the situation more harshly? if so then why?

  2. Protests in St. Louis point out that we still have a lot of work to do as a country to fix the relationship between the police and people of color. I don't know how to fix the problem. But I think a good first step is open communication.

  3. I agree with sam yes I think there should be more communication between the two... and it just shows what our country needs to fix

  4. To me, the prospect of using violence as a means of protesting is almost laughable. Why cause physical harm to others when you can use your infinite amount of ammunition that comes straight out of your mouth and brain?

  5. Though violence did indeed occur, it should also be noted that officers reportedly responded by mockingly using chants popular among protesters while making dubious arrests, including that of a licensed reporter for the Washington Post. While SOME just police action was surely taken, that doesn't exclude ALL police action that night from speculation; also you're looking for the word seamlessly ;)
