'Hell on wheels': Five disabled New Yorkers file hundreds of lawsuits//KLARK JOHNSON

Almost 400 small business owners have received lawsuits for lack of handicap access by five handicap New Yorkers. While some see the lawsuits as a part of a "cottage industry" of "Serial plaintiffs" who target mom-and-pop establishments for "quick cash settlements", Others see the lawsuits as helping Americans with disabilities.(American with Disabilities Act) . Two blind New Yorkers have filed 23 suits against websites that don't have screen reading software. Seven businesses have been sewed by a woman who was not allowed to have her service dog inside.

I think its cool to see so many people take a stand for themselves and other disabled Americans. I actually find it interesting the amount of lawsuits you can file at a time. Four other New Yorkers have filed 200 suits over wheelchair access. Fontanes, 69, of Queens, has filed 13 suits. I hope this brings well needed awareness to disabled Americans needs.

  1. This is interesting because there seems to be a lack of representation, for disabled Americans. I feel the lack of accommodation and representation is not only unfair to disabled individuals, but can be a safety hazard in certain circumstances. For example a person who is blind and isn't allowed to have a service dog in a resteraunt with them to help them see, runs the risk of running into objects and people, putting there safety at risk and others around them. I hope the 5 disabled New Yorkers fileing law suits will gain the accomadations that are essential to there needs and hopefully it will benfit other disabled citizens.
