California lawmakers sign bill in effort to Fight puppy mills- Isabella Firsching

The California State Senate voted unanimously for a bill banning the public sale of animals that do not come from rescue groups or organizations.  If the bill is signed by Jerry Brown, California will be the first state to enforce the Pet Rescue and Adoption Act. The bill is widely supported by organizations such as The Humane Society of the United States and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals because it will prevent the support of puppy mills and other breeding facilities. Data collected by the ASPCA revealed that in the last year over 1.5 million shelter animals were euthanized while waiting to be adopted, and a quarter of a billion dollars is spent each year to keep animal shelters running. So the bill would not only save taxpayer money but also promote the purchase of animals for animal shelters, thus lowering the amount of euthanized companion animals. Those who oppose this Bill argue that popular dog and cat breeds are often hard to find in animal shelters and many shelter animals lack medical history, while the second part of the opposition may be true, the bill does not ban private breeders, so more high end breeds are still easily accessible. Laws similar to this one have been popping up around the U.S. more frequently and are providing hope for the better treatment of animals.

I was shocked by the sheer number of animals that are euthanized every year, 1.5 million, thats more the population of Dallas (as of 2016). I personally hope that the bill is passed, it has very few in any negative side effects and would be a huge step in the fight for animal rights.

  1. I think that this bill is a great one and it almost seems like Common Sense (haha APUSH puns) that bills like this would be put into place. Hopefully if these non rescue groups are out of the picture, less animals will be euthanized each year.
