Ashley Neece- Hurricane Irma looters caught

Florida police have arrested over 12 people caught looting different stores throughout Florida. Two teens were caught after breaking into six homes. Fort Lauder dale police Chief Rick Maglione said,
“Going to prison over a pair of sneakers is a fairly bad life decision.” He also mentioned this “Stay home and look after your loved ones and be thankful they are all safe.” Hurricane Irma is currently entering east central Florida.

Hurricanes have hit the united states before, but a number of people taking advantage of the hurricanes are shocking. Does this have something to do with our current society?

  1. The fact a person would risk there safety and possibly there life, to steal. Reveals the character of the person or the desperation they face to obtain basic necessities, depending on the scenario. I don't know the full story but if those taking advantage of the hurricane to steal weren't in need of basic goods, it reveals a lot about our morals in society. Yet if some of those people caught loitering did it as a means of survival it says a lot about the financial circumstances some citizens in America face.

  2. I agree with Maddy, the same thing happened during Katrina when people were in desperate need of supplies to survive and many were arrested for looting. But there's another side to that situation, as I have seen photos of white people looting during Katrina and they were labelled as "survivors", while a similar photo featuring black people in the same act called them "looters".

  3. I agree with the following comments above. Why would anyone choose to do that while supposably "helping". That is very demeaning, and disappointing. I have also seen photos of people looting, and the racism involved within those photographs... it is awful.
