Kennedy Waterman - Immigrants Eager to Vote Obeyed All the Rules. It Didn't Pay.

In the last year, almost one million legal immigrants applied to become citizens of America. Because of this swell in applications, the backlog of the federal agency that approves these applications is huge. It is taking far too long to approve all of the applications, and these people aren't becoming citizens even though they've done everything right. This is especially urgent and important this year because of the election right around the corner. You have to be a citizen to vote, and these immigrants are not being processed by the agency. Of course, many of them are very upset because immigration policy is a giant topic of the debates this election.

The article was written September 30th, 2016, which shows how pressing the matter is. The election is very, very soon. It isn't fair that these people will be denied the right to vote just because the offices are moving to slowly. Before reading this article, I knew you had to be a citizen to vote, but I didn't know that so many were trying to become citizens and failing. I think the article was written for legal immigrants in the U.S. to see that people are aware of the problem, but also for the general public to understand that the outcome of the election will definitely be affected by this issue. I think this article is extremely important because of the immigration policies being debated, and those immigrants not being able to vote. For instance, Hillary Clinton has the majority of support from Latino Americans. And in Florida alone, there are 66,000 people unable to vote because they are stuck in the backlog. They could be the defining votes in the race. This can be related to the late 18th century and early 19th century elections. Black people didn't have the right to vote, so an entire population wasn't represented in those presidential races.

  2. This election has become a huge problem in this country, and has limited who can vote or not. Immigrants are involved in many things they are discussing so they do have a right to vote!

  3. The election is definitely a big deal in the country and I believe that we need as many people to vote as possible in order to bring about positive change. Legal immigrants should have the right to vote.

  4. It's terrible that these immigrants are a huge demographic in our nation that will not be able to represent themselves with votes in the election.

  5. The election is an amazing privilege to have in a country, and it's horrible that some are being denied that right, even i they have the right requirements. Offices in charge of immigration need to speed up this process!

  6. I believe that the immigrants should be able to vote because they come to America because they want a better life and they should be able to vote who they want to run their new country and I do not agree with what the government is doing to the immigrants that does not allow them to vote.- Samantha Pena 7th period
