Grace Schwall - ‘I Live in a Lie’: Saudi Women Speak Up

This article is about the oppression Saudi Arabian women face in their daily lives. The New York Times encouraged these women to tweet to the newspaper about the struggles of having to be submissive to men even as grown women. Women are required to get permission from their male "guardians" for everything from travel and educational opportunities to shopping trips and going out with friends. Through social media Saudi Arabian women were able to express their frustrations, hatred and even some appreciation for the patriarchy they live in.

This article was written by Mona El-Nagaar from the New York Times to let Americans know about the patriarchal oppression women in other countries face in our world today. In these quotes grown women with jobs such as doctors and teachers express the humiliation they feel when they're required to get permission from their male guardian to do simple daily tasks. The male guardians often hold women back from their full educational/ career potential. Women are almost treated as children because  they must have a guardian their whole life and always be submissive to men while even adolescent males have the freedom to make their own choices. It was shocking to see some women support this oppression. Some expressed that they feel they would be unable to handle their own affairs without their guardian. This connects to the movement of the cult of domesticity during the Antebellum Age. It encouraged the oppression of women by emphasizing that they belong in the home and was often supported by women. This movement was a response to women beginning to work in factories and the Second Great  Awakening ideals of a wife being submessive to her husband. In the United States the women's rights movement soon helped women earn more rights and freedom however in countries such as Saudi Arabia an effective women's rights movement has not occurred.
