Sophia: We have 20 years -- at the very most -- to prevent mass extinction

Summary: Humans are causing Earth's next mass extinction. We have had only five others in history ( including the dinosaurs). Oceans are becoming more polluted and overfishing is occurring, fossil fuels are heating the planet, invasive species and diseases are being spread, and much more. Other scientists say that these numbers are misleading and that the mass extinction will occur by 2100 or 2200, but not 2020. We must stop using fossil fuels to stop climate change and protect the oceans for the sake of biodiversity.

Analysis: This is quite a scary article. When thinking of renewable resources and ending overfishing, people usually agree that we must not deplete the resources we have. However, there is a bigger picture. We are not only trying not to deplete our resources, but we are also trying to preserve the planet's species. We are currently at a very high rate of specie loss right now and, in 100-200 years, Earth as we know it may be doomed.

  1. It's important that we make greater efforts to conserve our environment so that something as horrible as an extinction doesn't occur.

  2. This is so scary. I truly fear for the future of our planet because kids born around our time are walking into it blind. Businesses and corporations are focusing on their profits ignoring the land we will soon have to face as adults. We aren't even old enough to control the future yet. It is basically in their hands.
