Nia Edwards 4th period Dallas Zoo lion kills lioness in front of visitors

Nia Edwards
Current Event

On November 17th at 2:15PM a terrible event happened at the zoo. A lion bit and killed a lioness in their exhibit while visitors watched. None of the people were aware of what was happening until it was finished. Everyone thought the lions were playing when all of a sudden, the 5-year-old lioness, Johari, died. The lion had bitten him in the throat for " like 10 minutes until it quit moving. The remaining lions and lionesses were  removed off the habitat and the zoo temporarily closed. The zoo keepers are still trying to figure out why the incident happened.

This story is really sad. As an animal lover I couldn't imagine witnessing a lion killing another lion. I hope that the zoo keepers figure out why the attack happened so that in the future they can prevent it from happening again. I'm really puzzled at how this lion could just randomly kill one of its own kind. I also feel great sympathy for the people that saw it happen, they must really feel traumatized. In hindsight, I'm glad that the lions have been moved from the habitat temporarily so that the people can figure out what happened.

  1. This sounds awful, you would think they would have someone monitoring the animals, so sad.

  2. It is to me that it took the zoo employees ten minutes to figure out something was wrong. I know they aren't exactly experts, but after watching them for a while you'd think they would be accustomed to the lions' normal behavior.

  3. I actually watched this on the news this morning. I can't believe the bystanders did not know what was going on while it was happening, not that there was anything they could have done, but that just goes to show how fast terrible things can happen and that we should have more security not just for humans but also for animals

  4. He was biting her in the throat for ten minutes and people thought they were playing? Guys...a lion biting into anything's throat is usually serious business...

  5. Aww, the poor lions. This is so sad. I guess though, putting these wild animals in zoo exhibits in the first place though, may have something to do with why they are so upset and angry. Perhaps the area is too small or perhaps the lions are simply going crazy being contained this way. I guess we will never truly know.
