Illegal Immigrants Are Divided Over Importance of Citizenship - Camille Vigil

The issue over undocumented citizens in the United States has presented new concerns as of recently. People who are here that are undocumented are working toward obtaining more rights in America. However, the level of rights they hope to attain are varying; some hoping for full citizenship, others hoping at least for rights that would make their lives less difficult that it already is, such as being able to get drivers' licenses (illegal immigrants are not able to obtain drivers' licenses in many states because a social security card is needed in order to do so).
This month, protests across the country by those in favor of the passing of a House bill including a "pathway to citizenship" have shed light on the controversy over whether naturalization should be offered to illegal immigrants or not. This week President Obama has presented a new series of small bills aimed at giving immigrants more rights and eliminating some of their adversities, following the House of Representatives' objection to a bill passed by the Senate in June.

I'm really conflicted on this issue. I feel that it's wonderful that efforts are being made to aid hard working immigrants, many of whom have lived in America for decades in the pursuit of a happier life than was available in their home countries. However, I also think that we should be cautious about how freely we offer citizenship to immigrants. If we give these rights too freely, America could begin to develop the stereotype of being an "open-border" nation, which could allow too many people into the country and create potential danger in opening citizenship to more people. Our population is also rapidly growing, and though it is great to allow other the opportunity of living the "American dream", it may be necessary to draw the line at a certain point.

  1. I just wrote the longest and best comment ever but it self deleted. So in summary we need to decrease immigration so that specialization in the work place decreases, therefore increasing people's independence and lessing reliance on others creating a more stable economy and a more educated population. I gave all sorts of reasons and it was beautiful, but alas, you win some you lose most.
