Winter Olympics Without France - Lauren Rothert

On Thursday, French Sports Minister, Laura Flessel, announced that there was a possibility that France would not attend the 2018 Winter Olympics. The Winter Olympics are set to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and France is concerned with security issues. Laura Flessel emphasized that if France's security was not assured then they would not be in attendance in South Korea. The growing tensions between North Korea and the United States is just another factor pushing France away. The Winter Olympics are set to happen in February, and the France are predicted to do well. Last Winter Olympics (2014) France ranked either overall for total medals, they won fifteen.

It is sad to think that the French sports teams might not attend the Olympics because of safety concerns. In my opinion, that should never be an issue. The Olympics are held every four years so people of their sports can compete and bring pride to their country. The games are supposed to be fun and exciting, no one should have to worry about safety. I hope tensions decrease, and the French are able to attend the Winter Olympics, because it would not feel right without them in attendance. The fact that France might not go to the Olympics reminds me of the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott.

  1. Olivia Wall-That is very sad that safety and security are causing major countries, like France, to question whether to attend or not, but understandably. I agree with you that the Olympics are so special and are fun. I hope tensions are released as well.

  2. I agree that it would not feel right without the French in the Olympics. The point of the Olympics is for the world to be able to come together in a competitive, enjoyable, and safe environment. I wonder if we will face more issues like this in future Olympics.

  3. I think the location of the olympics should be reconsidered since there is major tensions between South and North Korea. Or if other countries nearby were to have more troops or security attend to make sure that everything goes swiftly and safely.

  5. The growing issues between North Korea, and the rest of the world really, should not affect the Olympics. The Olympics are often seen as a unifying event. They bring the world together and allow them to compete for a common goal. It's sad that today's problems are affecting this sacred thing.

  6. I agree with everything above. The Olympics is often seen as an event that brings our countries together and helps us bond and feel like a family. But with rising tensions between nations things are not seeming to go as they usually do.
