Trevor Turnbow//Miss America 2018

At the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic city Sunday night the interview questions had a different quality to them. This year they asked multiple questions about the Trump administration, and things that have been going on currently in our government. The contestant who ended up winning talked about how it was a bad idea for him to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord. Another contestant was asked about the scandal with Trump and Russia and said she hasn't seen enough facts to convict anyone, but thinks the situations should be investigated thoroughly. Miss Texas was asked about the Charlottesville Riots and immediately condemned white supremacy calling the events at the attack terrorism and said that Trump took far too long to make any statements regarding the attack.
The title of this article starts with "Miss America Gets Political" and the tone it's written in and the tweets included with the article obviously think that it's ridiculous to bring politics into this event, which is ironic that a political news source like FOX news is condemning people for being political. I personally agree with all the things the contestants in the Miss America pageant said, and I think this is a good opportunity to bring up actual important topics that need to be discussed. I also think that complaining about things being "too political" is a sign of privilege. People don't care or want to hear about politics because none of the changes being made are immediately affecting them or their rights. It's a common thing for people to complain about making things political, but those people don't have to worry about the government making a decision that could alter their life or rights as an American, those people get to turn on the tv and see a plethora of characters that look and act like them to identify with, those people tend to take for granted the opportunities they've been handed. I myself sometimes find myself unaware of my own privilege, but it's the responsibility of those who are to understand and combat oppression for others. Which is why it's important for the Miss America Pageant to make this discussion public and widespread.

  1. I think that political question on a competition that many people watch are necessary. It gives people a chance to hear other's opinions on politics, and even form or solidify their own. I also think that it's important to have a well-rounded miss america, even if it is just a dumb competition to some people.

  2. I believe that even if people wish "not to hear" political opinions, they are an important aspect of picking who will represent our country as Miss America. It is important to know what one is talking about when referring to our country, and politics play a huge part in our country today, although we sometimes wish that wasn't true, it is.

  3. I think it's great to see pageants asking political questions. Many young girls are heavily influenced by these women and to see Miss Texas say that the tragedy in Charlottesville was an act of terrorism was amazing and surprising coming from a Texan girl. It's really sad to see news channels like FOX patronizing these women because they spoke their mind.

  4. Personally I believe that implementing politics in a event that is so commonly watched is important because its another platform to express the common mans beliefs and/or 'sides' on current events. Also it is important for women who are candidates to represent america are well educated on whats happening in our country today. There is no wrong in including politics in an event that is so widely viewed.
